Stosur crashes out in Brisbane

Australian hope Sam Stosur has crashed out in the Brisbane International second round at Pat Rafter Arena on Tuesday night.

Sam Stosur has crashed out of the Brisbane International in the second round on Tuesday night.

Nursing a heavily bandaged right wrist, Australian hope Stosur fought back from a set and a break down before finally succumbing 6-1 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 to Spanish sixth seed Carla Suarez Navarro at Pat Rafter Arena.

World No.13 Suarez Navarro will play the winner of the second round clash between new top seed Garbine Muguruza of Spain and American Varvara Lepchenko.

Former US Open champion Stosur has never advanced past the second round at Brisbane in six attempts.

Stosur ended 2015 ranked No.27 - her worst year-end finish since 2008.

Suarez Navarro levelled her head-to-head record with Stosur at 3-3.

Former world No.8 Suarez Navarro won nine straight games to take the first set in 28 minutes and snatch a 3-0 lead in the second before a shellshocked Stosur fought back.

She levelled at 4-4, squandered two break points in the ninth game before bouncing back again to dominate her Spanish opponent in the second set tiebreaker.

But in the third set, Suarez Navarro broke Stosur in the third game and wrestled back the momentum.

World No.3 and former Wimbledon finalist Muguruza was gifted top spot in the draw after Romania's Simona Halep succumbed to an Achilles complaint on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Ekaterina Makarova beat lucky loser and fellow Russian Margarita Gasparyan 6-4 2-6 6-3 in their first round clash on Tuesday night.

Gasparyan received a last minute entry after defending champion Maria Sharapova (forearm) also pulled out of the Brisbane tournament on a nightmare day for organisers.

Two-time Australian Open winner Victoria Azarenka will now face Belgian lucky loser Ysaline Bonaventure instead of Halep in her second round clash this week.
