Strikers' Rashid Khan in sight of T20 mark

Adelaide Strikers' Rashid Khan is in sight of becoming the first person to claim 100 Twenty20 wickets in a calendar year after his Big Bash League heroics.

What Rashid Khan does off the field is more impressive than what the Afghan spinner does on it, according to Adelaide Strikers teammate Alex Carey.

But many may find that hard to believe after Rashid maintained his Midas touch to stay on track to become the first to take 100 Twenty20 wickets in a calendar year.

Rashid, 20, was named man-of-the-match after claiming 3-19 to inspire Adelaide's five-wicket win over Brisbane Heat in their Big Bash League opener at the Gabba.

He picked up where he left off after being last summer's leading BBL wicket-taker with 18 scalps.

However, Strikers star Carey revealed he admired Rashid's behind the scenes work more than the Afghan X-factor's on-field success.

"He has the freak skills but it is the stuff he does behind the scenes that is a credit to him," said Carey, who struck a pivotal 70 for Adelaide.

"He goes into the gym after hours, he goes for the extra runs, he bowls most balls than most guys I have seen.

"What he does on the field is amazing but it's the stuff that we see off the field that is a credit to him."

Still, Rashid's on-field feats seem pretty hard to beat with the Strikers in sight of a remarkable 100 wicket milestone for 2018.

Ahead of Sunday's BBL clash with Melbourne Renegades, Rashid's 2018 tally stands at 92 wickets from 57 games - already the most T20 scalps claimed in a calendar year according to cricket.com.au website.

He eclipsed West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Bravo's 2016 mark of 87 wickets from 72 matches.

Rashid has ample time to shatter the 100 barrier with three BBL matches left this year for Adelaide.

Australian one-day deputy Carey was relieved to have Rashid back for the Strikers' BBL title defence.

"He's obviously got the skills, we all know that, but I think he's got a lot between the ears," he said.

"He knows how he's going to get batters out.

"He analyses them pretty quickly out in the middle. He analyses the wicket, and he knows what's going to be effective."
