Strong earthquake hits Tokyo

A strong magnitude 5.6 quake has hit eastern Japan, shaking buildings in Tokyo, but there has been no reports of damage or a tsunami warning.

A magnitude-5.6 earthquake has rocked eastern Japan, but no tsunami warning was issued, the Japan Meteorological Agency says.

The quake shook buildings in Tokyo and the surrounding areas on Monday night. But there were no immediate reports on casualties or damage to property.

The seismic centre of the quake that shook the region at 9.23pm local time was in the south of Ibaraki prefecture, east of Tokyo, the agency said. The quake struck at a depth of 40 kilometres.
