A strong 6.3-magnitude earthquake has struck the Pacific nation of Papua New Guinea, seismologists have said in a further revision of earlier data, while no tsunami warning has been issued.
The quake struck at 1:09 am (1509 GMT Sunday) with its epicentre on the western tip of New Britain island, the US Geological Survey said. The epicentre was at a depth of 183 kilometres (114 miles) - reducing the likelihood of serious damage.
Papua New Guinea, which is beset by poverty despite rich mineral deposits, sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates.
