Strong quake hits east of Indonesia

An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale has been felt off Indonesia's eastern Islands.

An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale has struck off Indonesia's eastern Islands.

The quake hit just before 7am local time in the Kepulauan Barat Daya region of Indonesia.

The region is 620km northwest of Darwin, and 385km east of Dili.

The tremour was a very deep quake, striking more a depth of more than 11km.

No immediate tsunami warnings have been issued, and there is no word on whether neighbouring towns recorded building collapses or casualties.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.

A 7.6-magnitude quake that struck Sumatra island in September killed more than 1,000 people.
