Strong quake hits Russia's far east

A strong earthquake, which early estimates put at magnitude 6.9, has struck Russia's far east, according to the US Geological Survey.

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 has struck near Komandorskiye Ostrava in Russia's far east, the US Geological Survey says.

The quake struck on Wednesday at a depth of about 33km just off the coast in the Bering Sea.

There is no tsunami threat after the quake, according to the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
