Buildings in Chile's capital Santiago have been shaken by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake but there have been no immediate reports of damage.

A 6.4-magnitude quake has rattled Chile's capital Santiago, shaking buildings, but authorities say there have been no immediate reports of damage.

Chile's emergency office Onemi called it a "major" seismic event centred on the capital region and central Chile.

The US Geological Survey said the epicentre of Friday's quake was about 75km northeast of Talca and southeast of the capital, at a depth of about 90km.

The quake did not, however, meet the requirements to generate a tsunami off the coast, the Chilean navy said.
