Damaging winds continue to lash parts of Victoria as a cold front moves in from South Australia.
The Bureau of Meteorology has a severe weather warning in place for the state's Central, South West, North East and West and South Gippsland districts along with parts of the Wimmera on Thursday.
Gusty northwesterly winds up to 70km/h are expected in Melbourne, while damaging gusts up to 100km/h are forecast in elevated areas.
The Grampians' Mount William recorded the state's highest peak gust of 96km/h but that figure could blow out to 110km/h for alpine areas, senior forecaster Stephen King says.
"(The wind) should stay up for the evening and into the early hours of the morning and then begin to ease during early Friday," he said.
Southwestern Victoria and Melbourne enjoyed a few spots of rain on Thursday morning and there's likely more in the works.
"That rain will continue in the southwest, producing maybe another five to 10 millimetres," Mr King said.
"(It) should creep up to Melbourne later on in the evening and into Friday morning."
But the worst of the weather is yet to come.
"Bit of a miserable Saturday coming up," Mr King said.
"A cold front comes through (Melbourne) in the early morning and so we'll get a wintry blast for the rest of the day - the typical sort of showery day with possible hail and thunder in the afternoon, getting up to 13C.
"Most of the day we'll be spending around the 10C mark (but) with the windy conditions behind that cold front it will feel closer to 5C."
The Alpine region is also expected to get up to 40cm of snow on Friday and Saturday.
