Strong winds scare Aussie diver

Australia's Esther Qin admits she is scared to compete at the inaugural Gold Coast Grand diving event due to strong wind gusts around the outdoor venue.

Calls for a temporary roof on Gold Coast's 2018 Commonwealth Games pool are again expected with Australian diver Esther Qin admitting she is scared to compete at the outdoor venue.

The Glasgow Commonwealth Games champion on Friday revealed she was afraid of the strong winds that had buffeted the venue for this week's inaugural Gold Coast Grand Prix, in another blow to the maligned pool.

"I'm very scared to dive in the outdoor pool. I'm really struggling with the wind," Qin said after the 3m springboard semi-finals.

Gusts had also concerned international divers in the women's 10m platform event on Thursday's opening day.

Calls for a temporary roof first began in August last year when wild weather hit the revamped venue's first international event - the rain sodden Pan Pacs swimming championships.

For the record, the Rio Olympic pool is also outdoors.

Qin initially showed no sign of nerves at the first diving event held at the revamped Gold Coast pool.

She is second and Australian teammate Maddison Keeney third behind China's Han Wang in the semi-finals standings ahead of Sunday's 3m springboard decider.

Qin (342.35 points) trailed only China's Wang (350.15) in a high scoring semi-final with Keeney surprisingly not far behind (331.05).

Keeney was initially not listed to dive in the individual 3m event.

"I've been training with the mindset of only doing synchro, so having to do individual at the last moment was pretty hard," said Keeney who won two springboard medals at Glasgow.

"(But) I really like competing in the outdoor pools ... if the wind is not too strong, I really enjoy it."

London Olympian Anabelle Smith and world junior champion Georgia Sheehan withdrew with injury after the 3m preliminary round.

Meanwhile, Australia's Nicholas Jeffree and Kurtis Mathews qualified in fourth and fifth for Sunday's 10m platform final behind China's Xiaohu Tai.

Matthew Mitcham (3m springboard) and team captain Melissa Wu (10m platform) feature on Saturday in World Cup finals.
