Struggling Auxerre sack coach Casoni

Coach Bernard Casoni has been sacked by Auxerre after the club's Ligue 2 defeat on Sunday left it in danger of relegation to the third division.

Auxerre have sacked coach Bernard Casoni after Friday's Ligue 2 defeat left the former top flight Burgundy outfit in danger of relegation to the third division.

The club also sacked their physical trainer Rodolphe Duvernet, as they sit in 16th place just one point above the first relegation spot.

It is the third time since 2012 that the club, which had been guided by Guy Roux for over 40 years until 2005, has changed coach mid-season.

Casoni replaced Jean-Guy Wallemme in December 2012, nine months after the departure of Laurent Fournier during the club's last season in Ligue 1.

Many former top French football players such as Eric Cantona, Laurent Blanc and Djibril Cisse started their professional careers in Auxerre.

The club won their only Ligue 1 title in 1996.
