Students shaken after NSW school lock down

Primary school students huddled under their desks in Orange after reports of a gunman on school grounds.

Students at a school in NSW's central west have been left shaken after huddling under their desks following reports of a gunman on school grounds.

Police responded to the precautionary lock down at Calare Public School in Orange on Thursday afternoon but gave the all-clear after a short time.

A student from the primary school says five bells rang out "and that means lock down".

"It was really scary, we hid under the desks," he told AAP.

"Apparently the man left and got in a car."

It is believed no one was injured during the incident.

A spokesman from the Department of Education said parents were advised of the situation but nobody was ever in "immediate or direct danger".

"The school continued to follow the safety procedure until police confirmed the all-clear," he said.

Lock downs are one of several emergency plans rehearsed by school students.
