More than 300 medical, business and engineering students have been chosen to take part in the federal government's $100 million flagship Asian education plan.
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop on Wednesday announced 24 universities have been successful in their applications to the 2014 pilot phase of the New Colombo Plan, enabling students to study in Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan and Indonesia in the first semester of the year.
The program will take engineering students to Indonesia, medical students to Singapore and Japan, and business and Chinese language students to Hong Kong.
Ms Bishop told federal parliament talks with her Indonesian counterpart Marty Natalegawa have been held on expanding the Indonesian program to include agriculture and beef trade.
The $100 million program, to be rolled out over four years, is part of the government's foreign policy focus aiming to build deeper ties with the Asia Pacific region.
