Stunning win for Flanagan in NYC marathon

Shalane Flanagan has claimed a stunning victory over Kenyan three-times champion Mary Keitany in the New York Marathon, the first US woman to win in 40 years.

Shalane Flanagan has become the first American woman to win the New York City Marathon in 40 years when she claimed a dominant victory over Kenyan three-times champion Mary Keitany.

The men's title went to Kenyan Geoffrey Kamworor, who held off countryman Wilson Kipsang on Sunday.

Flanagan, who had never won a major marathon, clocked an unofficial two hours, 26 minutes 53 seconds for a stunning victory at the age of 36.

Keitany struggled home in 2:27:54 with Ethiopia's Mamitu Daska third in 2:28:08.

Kamworor finished in an unofficial 2:10:53 with Kipsang three seconds behind.

Manuela Schar finally upended four-time defending champion Tatyana McFadden to win the women's wheelchair race, completing a Swiss sweep with men's winner Marcel Hug.

Schar powered through the five boroughs in an unofficial time of 1:48:10, taking the top spot after three straight runner-up finishes in New York.

Australia's Madison De Rozario finished fifth with a time of 2:04:28.

Hug pulled away from Canada's Josh Cassidy in the final miles to repeat as the men's wheelchair champion and win New York for the third time.

The Swiss star wheeled in an unofficial time of 1:37:17, beating Cassidy by more than two minutes. Hug won last year's race by sixth hundredths of a second over Australia's Kurt Fearnley, who didn't take part.
