Suarez Navarro into WTA Biel second round

Carla Suarez Navarro has made the most of her wildcard in the Biel Ladies Open, making light work of Julia Boserup to advance to the second round.

No.2 seed Carla Suarez Navarro secured her place in the second round of the Ladies Open in Biel with a straight-sets win over American Julia Boserup.

Spaniard Suarez Navarro, the one-time world number six, came through 6-1 6-2 and will play Italy's Camila Giorgi for a place in the quarter-finals.

However, No.5 five seed Laura Siegemund failed to progress as she lost her first-round match 6-2 4-6 7-6 (7-3) against Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland.

Already through to the last eight is unseeded Czech Kristyna Pliskova, who followed up her win over Roberta Vinci by beating Donna Vekic 6-1 6-2.

Pliskova will meet Annika Beck or qualifier Marketa Vondrousova for a semi-final spot.

Also securing their place in the third round were German seventh seed Julia Goerges, who defeated Oceane Dodin of France 6-4 6-3, and Belgian's Elise Mertens, along with Anett Kontaveit of Estonia.
