Donato Anyau says independence for his homeland of South Sudan has been a hard fought battle and now is a time for jubilation as well as reflection.

Donato Anyau says independence for his homeland of South Sudan has been a hard fought battle and now is a time for jubilation as well as reflection.

The father of five was never told why he was jailed by Sudanese authorities 20 years ago.

Mr Anyau and his wife fled to Egypt soon after his release and eventually made it to Australia eight years ago.
