A suicide bomber has killed more than 20 people in an attack on a Kurdish festival at Hasakeh in northeastern Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says.

"More than 20 people were killed when a kamikaze bomber detonated his explosives at a gathering in Hasakeh on the eve of (Kurdish new year) Nowruz," Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP after Friday's attack.

Dozens more were wounded, he added.
