Summer snow falling in Victoria

Victorians don't put away the winter coats just yet - a cold front is bringing cool conditions, rain and even snow to the state.

Snow has fallen in Victoria's high country as rugged-up Melburnians are left wondering if summer will ever truly arrive.

It may be the second week of December but snow dusted trees on Mount Hotham on Friday with an overnight low of -2.4C recorded just after 8am.

"Summer snow, just decorating the trees for Xmas," the resort's spokesman tweeted.

Mount Buller also received a sprinkling of white powder after an overnight low of -2C.

The Bureau of Meteorology says snow showers are possible down to 1200 metres until Friday afternoon.

Many Victorian towns are experiencing temperatures in the mid-teens but windy conditions mean apparent temperatures are down in single figures.

Melbourne is inching towards a predicted top of 17C which is seven degrees lower than the December average.

"It's not quite time yet for Victorians to put away winter coats or scarves," the bureau's severe weather meteorologist, Steven McGibbony, said.

Hail storms are expected across the southern part of the state.

But the cold snap is fine for resident Steven Wong who says Melbourne is simply a city spoiled for choice.

"We offer visitors and residents a choice of their favourite weather," he posted to Facebook.

"If you are sick and tired of summer, then Melbourne puts on winter for you - right in the middle of summer."
