South Korean golfer Sung Hyun Park has won the US Women's Open by two strokes at Trump National for her first major championship.

The 23-year-old Park carded a closing five-under-par 67 to finish at 11-under 277 on Sunday in Bedminster, New Jersey.

Park's compatriot, 17-year-old amateur Hye-Jin Choi, finished second after a one-under 71 to be nine under, while another two South Koreans, Mi Jung Hur (68) and So Yeon Ryu (70), shared third spot at seven under.

Australia's Minjee Lee made a late charge, closing with a six-under 66 to finish in a tied 11th at four under.

The 23-year-old Park won a day-long battle with front-running Shanshan Feng and teenager Choi.

Park needed a fine chip from over the green on the par-5 18th hole to save par and win the $US900,000 ($A1.1 million) top prize from the $US5 million ($A6.4 million) event.

It was a far cry from a year ago when Park hit into the water on the 18th hole at CordeValle in California and missed a playoff with eventual winner Britanny Lang and Anna Nordqvist by two shots.

"The experience was definitely worth it, because based on that good experience that I had last year, I think I was able to garner the championship this year," Park said through an interpreter.

Walking to the scoring tent to sign her card, she got a thumps-up from US President Donald Trump who was watching from his boxand the course he owns.

"Well, to be honest with you, I still cannot believe that it is actually happening," said Park.

"It's almost feel like I'm floating on a cloud in the sky."

Feng, from China, had a 75 to drop into a tie for fifth at six under with Spain's Carlota Ciganda(70) and South Korea's Jeongeun6 Lee (71).
