Santa won't need to rug up as he delivers presents across Victoria as the warmer weather has finally arrived.

The Bureau of Meteorology says Christmas Day will be a sunny 26C in Melbourne and could hit 30C in other parts of the state.

Senior forecaster Beren Bradshaw says there will be some light winds across Victoria on Tuesday, but it will be breezier in coastal areas.

So it will be perfect weather for backyard or beach cricket and eating Christmas dinner alfresco.

Santa and his reindeer might break a sweat while delivering presents too, with the temperature not tipped to drop below 17C until early on Christmas morning.

Perfect conditions are also forecast for the Boxing Day Test.

"We can expect some morning cloud and a sunny afternoon with some light winds and a top of 26C," Ms Bradshaw told AAP.

While Christmas Day will be relatively mild, those living in northern Victoria should brace for a heatwave that could see records tumble.

Those parts can expect low 40s on Wednesday and low to mid 40s on Thursday with the soaring temperatures expected to last up to five days.

Melbourne will be much cooler, but can expect a top of 36C on Thursday before another cool change.
