With the sun setting on Sydney Harbour, US Vice President Mike Pence has ended his official two-day visit to the city by taking in the view from the city's iconic Opera House.

Mr Pence spent the day sightseeing around the harbour, with a visit to Taronga Zoo, a harbour cruise, afternoon tea at NSW Government House and the Opera House.

Accompanied by his wife Karen and their daughters Audrey and Charlotte, Mr Pence was given a quick half-hour private tour of the Opera House by chief executive Louise Herron.

Mr Pence waved from the top of the Opera House's famous steps to a small crowd that had gathered at metal fences lining the bottom stairs.

Inside as police armed with machine guns patrolled the Opera House's corridors, Mr Pence peaked inside the Concert Hall before wandering to a balcony at the rear of the building to take in a final glimpse of the harbour as the sun set behind the city's world famous bridge.

It was the last stop for America's second family, who had earlier shared afternoon tea with NSW Governor David Hurley and his family at his nearby historic residence.

Mr Hurley strolled with Mr Pence through the gardens while behind them his wife Linda chatted with Mrs Pence and the Hurley's three children kept Charlotte and Audrey entertained.

Families enjoying picnics in the afternoon sun in the adjoining Botanic Gardens seemed unaware of the US vice president's visit despite the large contingent of police.

Earlier, a huge police contingent took to the harbour to accompany Mr Pence and his family on a cruise hosted by NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian.

They also met some of Australia's famous wildlife during a visit to Taronga Zoo.

Mr Pence and his family are due to fly out of Sydney early Monday when they will head to Hawaii, the final stop on their 10-day tour of the Asia Pacific region.
