Super Mario Run has been rolled out to iPhones and iPads, marking the first time Nintendo has created a smartphone game based on the famous character.

The release follows the success of Pokemon Go, which Nintendo owns a minority stake in, earlier this year, BBC reports.

"Mario is one of the best loved and established icons of gaming and I think this is going to be tremendously successful," Piers Harding-Rolls from the IHS Technology consultancy told BBC.

In the game Super Mario sprints from left to right, pocketing coins, avoiding obstacles and squashing enemies.

The game has been altered to allow gamers to play one-handed on the touchscreen mediums.

The game requires a one-off in-app purchase of 7.99 pounds ($A13.45) and for users to be online in order to play.
