Australia has its first female indigenous federal parliamentarian, Olympian Nova Peris.
She has been confirmed as winning a Northern Territory Senate seat.
Ms Peris ran for Labor at the September 7 election, following the dumping of sitting senator Trish Crossin.
The Australian Electoral Commission on Wednesday confirmed she won the seat, with the other NT Senate seat going to sitting Country Liberal senator Nigel Scullion.
Ms Peris has been a trailblazer for indigenous people in sport, becoming the first Aboriginal woman to win an Olympic gold medal in 1996 for hockey.

Switching to athletics, she won gold medals in the 200 metres and four by 100 metres relay at the Commonwealth Games in 1998.
Senator Scullion has been appointed indigenous affairs minister in the Abbott government.
