The Super Retail Group's auto and sport businesses have performed strongly, offsetting weakness from its outdoor leisure chains Ray's Outdoor and BCF.

The group, which also owns Supercheap Auto, Amart Sport and Rebel, suffered a 23 per cent slide in net profit in the year to July 2 to $62.8 million.

Excluding one-off costs, including a writedown on the Ray's Outdoor brand, profit rose 2.2 per cent.

Revenue rose 8.2 per cent to $2.42 billion.

The group's three divisions, auto, sport and leisure, recorded strong revenue growth, with like-for-like sales climbing 4.4 per cent, 6.3 per cent and 4.4 per cent, respectively.

The leisure division, BCF and Ray's Outdoors, had weak earnings growth due to falling prices, stock clearances and higher product costs, and earnings before interest and tax dropped 42 per cent.

Chief executive Peter Birtles said that was disappointing but the division was improving, with BCF's operating profit strengthening in the second half of the year.

"We moved forward at the end of year in a stronger position than the start of the year," he said.

He said the transformation of Ray's Outdoors and Infinite Retail businesses along with supply chain improvements would address constrained earnings growth.

The leisure business continues to generate strong sales growth with like-for-like sales in the first seven weeks of 2016/17 up 10 per cent.

Auto business like-for-like sales rose 3.5 per cent and the sports division had about a four per cent lift.

Shares in Super Retail gained 59 cents, or six per cent, to $10.40.

SUPER RETAIL'S MIXED RESULTS:

* Net profit down 22.6pct to $62.8m

* Revenue up 8.2pct to $2.42b

* Final dividend unchanged at 21.5 cents
