Superannuation protections pass parliament

Changes to superannuation laws have cleared federal parliament, protecting low-balance accounts from excessive fees.

Low-balance superannuation accounts will be better protected from excessive fees under changes that have passed federal parliament.

Labor backed the legislation on Monday, despite criticising the coalition government for removing parts of the superannuation protection package in a deal it struck with the Greens on Thursday.

Debate on separate laws creating civil penalties for super trustees and directors who fail to act in the best interests of members was held off until Tuesday.
