Supercars changes for 2017 season

Changes to the 2017 Supercars season ahead of the opening round in Adelaide this weekend.

TYRES

Dunlop claim "all" lap records will come under threat this year after introducing a faster - yet durable - soft control tyre this season.

Drivers will only have two 40-minute practice sessions to get used to the new tyres in Adelaide on Friday before qualifying.

But Ford driver Fabian Coulthard's qualifying record (one minute, 20.0168 seconds) on the 3.22km Adelaide street circuit is still expected to be first to go.

The oldest lap records stand at Darwin (set in 1999) and Perth (2004), both held by Jason Bright.

RULES

Officials have ditched the controversial redress process, in which a driver lets a rival pass after a race incident to avoid penalty, following a judicial system review.

Experienced motorsport administrator Michael Masi will now investigate incidents as the new Deputy Race Director, assisted by new Driving Standards Advisor Craig Baird.

The issue came to a head when six-time series champion Jamie Whincup tried to redress late in last year's Bathurst 1000, sparking an incident that also ended the winning hopes of Garth Tander and Scott McLaughlin.

SCHEDULE

Newcastle will make its debut on the Supercars calendar, replacing the Sydney 500 as the season-ending round.

The Newcastle 500 is the only new event on the 15-round series, ending eight years of racing at Sydney Olympic Park.

FORMAT

The season-opening Adelaide 500 will feature two 250km races instead of two 125km races on the Saturday and a 250km event the next day.

April's Phillip Island round will switch from a sprint race format and will now feature two 250km races.

November's Auckland round will be held over two 200km races instead of four 100km events.
