Supercars' Sydney night race back in 2020

The night racing round at Sydney Motorsport Park will return to the Supercars calendar in 2020.

Supercars will return to night racing at Sydney Motorsport Park (SMSP) next year after the success of the inaugural event in August 2018.

On Saturday, NSW Government funding of $33 million for the installation of permanent lighting and infrastructure at Sydney's premier racing circuit to the delight of Supercars CEO Sean Seamer.

"This is a great step forward in our plans for Sydney," Supercars CEO Sean Seamer said in a statement.

"The 2018 night race was a fantastic proof of concept... We look forward to the SuperNight format returning in 2020 and moving on to the second phase of our partnership with the ARDC and NSW Government, which is to establish a Supercars team in Sydney, based at SMSP."

"Motor sport is the fourth most watched sport in the country and thousands of people in Western Sydney love it which is why we want to ensure the sport has a strong presence in Western Sydney in the future," NSW Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said in the Supercars statement.

The dates for next year's night event in Sydney are yet to be determined.

Seamer said a Sydney-based team would have the advantage of the premium facilities offered at Sydney Motorsport Park.

"This initiative will provide a manufacturer, team and their partners with immediate access to an international race track, premium function facilities for major corporate events, vehicle launches, drive days, vehicle appreciation sessions, product R&D and conferences," he said.

Supercars night racing in 2019 will be at Perth SuperNight in May.
