Supercars year going cold for Frosty

Mark Winterbottom's Supercars title defence is in danger of running out of steam after the Ford star's latest struggles at Sydney Motorsport Park.

He's the defending Supercars champion but Mark Winterbottom's season is in danger of running out of steam.

The Ford star barely warranted a mention at Sydney Motorsport Park on Saturday as he finished 11th in a race dominated by championship rivals Shane Van Gisbergen and Jamie Whincup.

It continues a poor run for western Sydney product Winterbottom, who has just one race win at the track in his career.

Winterbottom's Saturday showing means he is now sharing third place on the championship ladder with veteran Craig Lowndes, both drivers 186 points behind title leader Whincup.

The 35-year-old has been doing his best to stay in the title hunt with a string of podium finishes but his victory in the second race at Perth in May remains his only win of 2016.

Winterbottom admitted he simply wasn't up to speed in Saturday's race.

"It was a tough day but we soldiered on," he said.

"We'll look at the data ... go quicker again tomorrow and try and improve it.

"Once you're in the pack you're kind of just stuck there."

The Sydney SuperSprint event wraps up on Sunday with a 200km race from 2pm.
