Supergiants Rise to Hyderabad challenge

Australian Test captain Steve Smith took bragging rights against deputy David Warner in the Indian Premier League on Saturday when Pune defeated the Sunrisers.

Steve Smith's Rising Pune Supergiants squared their Indian Premier League ledger with a third win of the campaign over David Warner's Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Sent in after losing the toss, Warner chipped in with 43 from 40 balls before he was bowled by Jaydev Unadkat. Moises Henriques top-scored with an unbeaten 55 as the Sunrisers finished at 3-176 from their 20 overs.

Victorian quick Dan Christian took 1-20 from his four overs with Imran Tahir the other wicket-taker.

In reply Pune lost opener Ajinkya Rahane (2) early before a 72-run second-wicket partnership between Smith and Rahul Tripathi steadied the ship. Former Indian skipper MS Dhoni top-scored with an unbeaten 61 and won the day with a boundary off the final ball from Siddarth Kaul.

The victory left Pune one win adrift of the Sunrisers, while Mumbai Indians continued their stellar form to extended their lead at the top of the IPL standings to four points following a low-scoring win over the Delhi Daredevils.

The Daredevils won the toss and elected to field, restricting Mumbai to 8-142 from their 20 overs. Australian paceman Pat Cummins (2-20) and Amit Mishra (2-20) did the damage with the ball and bowled with economy as English opener Jos Buttler top-scored with just 28. Mitchell Johnson was stranded at the crease on 7 when the innings came to a close.

In reply Delhi managed just 128 for the loss of seven wickets after collapsing at one stage to 6-24.

Kiwi quick Mitchell McClenaghan was the destroyer, taking all three of his wickets in his first two overs.
