Supermaxis stack up for 2017 Sydney-Hobart

At least three former line honours' winners and formidable supermaxis are set to contest this year's Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

The 2016 Sydney to Hobart yacht race looks like having one of the strongest and most-impressive collection of supemaxis in the event's history.

The 50th entry received for the race starting on Boxing day on Sydney Harbour was supermaxi Black Jack, now owned by Queenslander Peter Harburg.

Formerly known as Alfa Romeo, she was the first yacht to break Wild Oats XI's line honours stranglehold in 2009 when then owner Neville Crichton ended her streak of four-straight wins.

Re-launched in late July for the 2017 Sydney-Gold Coast race, Black Jack finished just 3m 31s behind Wild Oats XI.

They clashed again at Hamilton Island, where Wild Oats proved better in windier conditions, while Black Jack was superior in lighter breezes.

Although Wild Oats XI has yet to officially enter, skipper Mark Richards has affirmed the Oatley family's record eight-time Sydney-Hobart line honours' champion will be on the start line.

The supermaxi has failed to finish the race for the past two years.

Rival supermaxi Comanche, the 2015 line honours' winner, co-owned by American Jim Clark and his Australian wife Kristy, will contest the race for the third time in four years.

Last year's line honours' victor and new race-record holder Perpetual Loyal might also be a starter.

New owner Christian Beck is considering his options.

Of the other 2016 supermaxis, third-placed Scallywag has entered this year, while CQS is also expected back.
