A factory for vitamin supplements has been gutted by a massive fire in Melbourne.

A vitamin supplements factory in Melbourne has been destroyed in a large fire.

It broke out just after 4am (AEDT) on Thursday in the Dingley Village industrial area in the city's south.

At least 50 firefighters were called and stopped the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, a County Fire Authority spokesman said.

Crews had to deal with exploding gas bottles before bringing the blaze under control in about an hour.

A cause of the fire has not been determined.
