Emergency supplies have been dropped to three outback communities in South Australia after floods cut roads across the state's north.

The State Emergency Service (SES) coordinated the aerial drop of food and medical supplies to about 100 people in Nepabunna, Iga Warta and Balcanoona who were running short after roads were cut by flooded creeks.

SES state duty officer Darryl Wright said heavy rain across the north of SA over the past few days had restricted access to a number of communities.

He said as well as causing problems for local residents the floods also posed a risk to travellers in the area.

"For their own safety, we strongly advise motorists travelling in remote or isolated areas to obey road closure signs, inform others of their travel plans and stick to the main roads," Mr Wright said.

Anyone stranded or needing help should call the SES on 132 500 or 000 if it's a life-threatening emergency.
