Support for gay marriage rises: poll

Support for gay marriage in Australia is at its highest level since March last year, according to the latest Essential poll.

Opposition to gay marriage in Australia appears to be one the wane.

The latest Essential poll found 25 per cent believe people should not be allowed to marry the same sex, the lowest percentage in a number of years.

Support for same-sex marriage, meanwhile, is at 63 per cent - the highest level since March 2016.

More than half (59 per cent) still believe a national vote is still the best way to decide on marriage equality, mostly those who are against it, down two per cent from a few weeks ago.

About 29 per cent think it should be decided by parliament.
