The latest opinion poll has found the coalition is clawing back ground from Labor, with support for Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and his Emissions Trading Scheme dropping.

The latest Nielsen poll, published in Fairfax newspapers on Monday, has found that while Labor retains a solid 54 to 46 per cent lead over the coalition on a two-party preferred basis, its support is down two points since last November.

Crucially in this election year, support for the government's ETS proposal is down 10 points over the same period, slipping to 56 per cent.

When voters were offered a choice between Labor's ETS and Mr Abbott's alternative fund to finance emissions reductions, 45 per cent of those polled preferred the fund and 39 per cent backed the trading scheme.

But when voters were asked to choose between Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott's broad approaches to climate change, 43 per cent supported Mr Rudd's approach and 30 per cent backed Mr Abbott.

Mr Rudd's standing as preferred prime minister has also taken a hit, with his support down nine points to 58 per cent, while Mr Abbott's has risen 10 points on former opposition leader Malcolm Turnbull's last poll as leader to 31 per cent.

Nielsen questioned 1400 voters nationally for the poll, which it conducted between Thursday and Saturday.
