US President Donald Trump has posted an image of his face superimposed on what seems to be the body of Sylvester Stallone from the promotional poster for the film Rocky III.

The image was posted on his Twitter and Instagram accounts on Wednesday at 11am local time, as most Americans were preparing for their Thanksgiving holiday.

No accompanying text was posted with the photo.

Social media users did not know what to make of it.

Others responded by posting shirtless photos of former US president Barack Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The official Twitter account for the Trump campaign mocked the Washington Post's coverage and its use of the term "doctored".

"Washington Post claims - without evidence - that @realDonaldTrump shared a “doctored” photo," the campaign tweeted.

The 1982 flick Rocky III featured as its theme song Eye of the Tiger and saw Stallone reprise his role as boxer Rocky Balboa.

Mr Trump occasionally tweets out memes and spoofs from various accounts on the internet, including some with controversial backgrounds and political leanings.

The president is in Florida where he is golfing and spending the Thanksgiving holiday.

Donald Trump Jr. also mocked the use of the term "doctored".

"I’ve heard from reliable sources that it’s not doctored," Donald Trump Jr. posted on Twitter.

He followed that post with another of Democratic Party politician Dam Schiff.

His head is superimposed on the body of a skinny, lean man in a leotard.

Meanwhile, other social media users were left bewildered.

YourVoice America host Bill Mitchell says people are over-reacting.
