Australian surfing champion Layne Beachley has lost her wedding ring while out surfing on Freshwater Beach in Sydney.

The former professional surfer tweeted about her misfortune on Monday, April 21:"Anyone swimming or surfing out at Freshwater please keep an eye out for my wedding ring!! Lost this arvo while surfing. #devastated".

The wife of INXS rocker Kirk Pengilly roped her husband in for the search and rescue mission the next day. She tweeted she still hadn't found it, but expressed her thanks for the support she had received.

"Thanks for all the messages of support and stories of rings lost and found.@KirkPengilly and I heading down to Freshy at low tide...." and followed up with "No harm in trying! Search and rescue mission".

A few twitter followers suggested Beachley try a waterproof metal detector to help in her search.

Beachley has been married to Pengilly since October 2010.
