Surfer mauled by shark on NSW coast

A 48-year-old man has been bitten in the arm by a shark while surfing in the north of New South Wales.

The Coopernook local was surfing off the rocks just south of the Crowdy Head headland last night when an eight-foot shark bit his left forearm and took a chunk out of the surfboard.

The man suffered deep cuts to his arm and forehead but his injuries are not considered life threatening.

Fellow surfers offered medical assistance until emergency services arrived and took the victim to John Hunter Hospital for surgery on his injured arm.
