Melbourne star Jack Viney's foot injury will keep him sidelined for up to six weeks in a major blow to the Demons' AFL finals hopes.

Viney had surgery on a plantar fascia injury on Monday afternoon after pulling up sore in Friday night's loss to Sydney at the MCG.

The setback means the Demons will be without their co-captains for an extended period, with Nathan Jones (quad) still facing another month on the sidelines.

"Jack had an operation this afternoon to release his plantar fascia," Demons football boss Josh Mahoney said.

"This has been an injury that he has been carrying for the majority of the season.

"We expect his recovery from this operation to be approximately four to six weeks, based on how quickly his foot can be reloaded post-operation."

Jesse Hogan, Jack Watts, Jeff Garlett and Christian Salem are also on the injury list, while Tom Bugg is facing a lengthy suspension for his ugly hit on Sydney's Callum Mills.

Hogan and Garlett are each a slim chance to return to face Carlton on Sunday but Watts is set to miss at least another week with his hamstring injury after suffering a setback at training.

Midfielder Dom Tyson faces a fitness test after injuring his knee against the Swans.

The sixth-placed Dees face major tests against Adelaide, Port Adelaide and Greater Western Sydney over the next month.
