Portuguese newspapers are reporting that Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo - who announced the birth of a son on his Facebook page - had the child carried by a surrogate mother in the US.

There has, however, been no comment from the footballer himself.

Media in the country widely reported Diario de Noticias' claims that artificial insemination would have been used.

The paper goes on to claim that the child was born on June 17, while Ronaldo was still at the World Cup in South Africa.

His sister Katia has been quoted as saying the boy - who will reportedly have his name revealed upon arrival in Portugal - has brown hair and eyes, and looks like his father.

Jornal de Noticias claimed that Ronaldo's mother, Dolores Aveiro, is taking care of her grandson.

It's also been widely reported that Ronaldo will care for the child, with consent of the surrogate mother.

Singer Ricky Martin, who also fathered a child with a surrogate mother, congratulated the Madrid star on social networking site Twitter.

'Much happiness to you and your family', Martin tweeted in Portuguese.

Ronaldo follows nine Twitter accounts - but Martin's is not one of them.
