New data reveals almost half of Melbourne's morning trains are breaching load standards with too many passengers on board.

New data shows Melburnians are being crammed into morning trains like sardines.

A 2015 Public Transport Victoria survey, obtained by the Victorian Greens through Freedom of Information, shows that trains are dangerously overloaded and breaching load standards by up to 400 people.

Victorian Greens leader Greg Barber says the data reveals that nearly half of morning peak trains breached load standards.

"This problem has been getting steadily worse for years. This problem hasn't snuck up on the government, but their only response has been to rip out seats to squeeze more people in," Mr Barber said in a statement on Wednesday.
