A 17-year-old student has appeared in court for the first time, in a preliminary hearing in connection with an Ohio high school shooting as the death toll climbed to three.

Two of the victims died on Tuesday, while another died shortly after the Monday shooting.

Student TJ Lane would remain in custody due to the serious nature of the accusations, the judge said in a televised court appearance.

Prosecutors have not yet filed charges in the case but must do so by Thursday. An arraignment was set for March 6.

The court must also decide whether to charge him as a juvenile or an adult, and prosecutor David Joyce said he would seek to try the suspect as an adult if the juvenile court judges determine there is cause.

The shooting occurred before the start of classes.

Four students were shot in the school's cafeteria and another in the hallway.

Prosecutors said Lane had left the school after the attack and was taken into police custody later, after fleeing into nearby woods.

The tragedy has claimed the lives of two children aged 16 and a 17 year old.

One pupil remains in hospital and another was released from hospital on Tuesday.

The incident awakened memories of the 1999 Columbine massacre, in which two students killed 13 victims and themselves in the worst shooting at a US high school.

That event prompted changes in school security nationwide.

The worst mass shooting in US history occurred at Virginia Tech University in April, 2007, in which a gunman killed 32 people.

Chardon is situated some 50 kilometres from the city of Cleveland.
