The first suspected asylum seeker boat of 2014 has reportedly been intercepted off the Northern Territory near Bathurst Island.

The year's first asylum seeker boat has reportedly been intercepted off the Northern Territory coast.

A boat carrying about 35 asylum seekers was boarded by the Royal Australian Navy near Bathurst Island, about 95 nautical miles north of Darwin, on Wednesday morning, the ABC reported.

The asylum seekers were believed to be headed for Darwin or Christmas Island.
