Suspected Percy victim bright, social girl

Gary Stilwell, who was the last person to see his sister alive in 1968, says news of her suspected killer's death has brought some peace.

Gary Stilwell fondly remembers his younger sister Linda as a bright, gregarious girl who liked playing on the beach.

Aged nine, he was the last person to see the seven-year-old alive when she vanished from his side on August 10, 1968, as he played an arcade machine.

"We were in Little Luna Park, an arcade. That's the last time I saw her," the 54-year-old says.

"I was looking at a kaleidoscope machine that they use to have.

"She was next to me, then she was gone.

"I just thought we got separated so I went home and she didn't come back."

News the prime suspect in Linda's disappearance and killing, Derek Percy, died without revealing what happened to her is disappointing, Mr Stilwell says.

"I would've thought at the end of his life he could've found it in his heart to actually give relief to us and to my mother in regards to Linda," he says.

"I don't think anybody believes that he didn't do it."

But the child killer's death has also brought Mr Stilwell some peace, given the spectre of Percy has been "hanging over our family like a black cloud for a long time".

"Knowing that he was alive, almost thumbing his nose at the victims' families, was quite shocking in my mind. But now he's gone, there is a form of closure for myself."

Mr Stilwell remembers Linda was a bright and trusting sister.

"I remember her playing on the beach at Middle Park, growing up.

"We were very close siblings. She was gregarious and we've missed that contact for the last 45 years."

While the family had pinned its hopes on Percy revealing where Linda's remains are, it now must wait for her inquest to reconvene for answers some time later this year.

Mr Stilwell hopes the coroner's finding will provide some closure.

"The ultimate closure would've been finding the remains and interring her properly," he says.

"It's been a very long time, so I hope it happens.

"I just hope the legacy of Linda will be that we're made complete again.

"That's my wish from the inquest as well. That at the end of the inquest we can move on and start a new chapter I guess."
