Swans out to atone for lacklustre opener

First-round AFL losers Sydney and Adelaide clash in a significant early season clash at the SCG, with both seeking to avoid a 0-2 start to the season.

Sydney midfield coach Dean Cox has warned of the consequences if the Swans players don't lift following a lacklustre first-round AFL performance against Western Bulldogs.

The Swans take on an Adelaide side who also lost last week at the SCG on Friday, but Cox said the Crows should enough in their defeat to Hawthorn to suggest they will be hard to beat.

"One of the key indicators other than the scoreboard was they had more inside 50s, they won more ball through the middle off the ground, so a lot of things they were doing well," Cox told AAP.

"Hawthorn's pressure was extreme and forced them to probably play a little bit differently to what they normally have and that's really important for us to try and do as well.

"Because Adelaide, if you give them time and space, their ball movement can certainly cut you up."

Sydney's midfield are primed to produce an improved performance after they came off second best in last week's loss to the Bulldogs.

"When you look at some of the numbers through the midfield in relation to loose ball gets, contested possession, we were smashed," Cox said.

"The focus has been on first of all on trying to rectify that and put that front of mind about how important it is to gain ascendancy and get the ball and the game played in your half."

Sydney have recalled have recalled forward Ben Ronke and Irish defender Colin O'Riordan in place of injured back Heath Grundy and omitted midfielder Jordan Dawson.

Cox expected livewire Ronke to add some energy.

"What he brings is ferocity around the contest, he's quick and applies an enormous amount of pressure, so that gives him shots on goals,": Cox said.

Adelaide have replaced injured midfielder Richard Douglas and defender Tom Doedee with Paul Seedsman and Kyle Hartigan.

In 2018, the Crows scored a 10-point win over Sydney at the SCG, one of seven home losses the Swans suffered last year.
