Three-time AFL premiership player Steve Johnson will stay in Sydney in retirement to take up a coaching role with the Swans.

The former Geelong and Greater Western Sydney star has been appointed Swans forward coach following his 516-goal playing career.

Johnson won three premierships with the Cats before his career ended with the Giants' preliminary final loss to Richmond last weekend.

His former Cats captain Tom Harley, who's the Swans' head of football, was quick to pounce on the 293-game player.

"Steve brings an impressive playing record and is widely acknowledged as having elite football IQ," Harley said.

"Towards the end of his playing days, Steve invested in his coaching career and as such we are very confident that he will transition to become a quality coach."

Johnson replaces Brett Kirk, who is set for a new role in the club.

Sydney premiership player Tadhg Kennelly has also joined the coaching ranks where he will work alongside the recently retired Jeremy Laidler in player development.
