Swans regain McVeigh for Demons AFL clash

Sydney have been boosted by the returns of former skipper Jarrad McVeigh and midfielder Zak Jones for their AFL clash against Melbourne on Friday night.

Former Sydney skipper Jarrad McVeigh will play just his third AFL game of the season when the Swans take on Melbourne on Friday night.

The 32-year-old was sidelined by a calf injury until round seven then suffered a hamstring tear in round eight.

But he made his return via the NEAFL last week and was added to the lineup with Zak Jones on Thursday night.

"It is great to have him back in the team," coach John Longmire said of McVeigh.

"We tossed up whether he should come back into the team last week but we decided to be a bit more conservative with him ... he pulled up really well from that game.

"He came through the week's training really well so it is good to have him back."

Jones has served a one-match ban for striking, while Callum Sinclair (omitted) and Will Hayward (foot) drop out of the team that scored a stunning last-minute win over Essendon.

The Swans have won six of their past seven games to improve to 10th spot with a 6-7 record after a disastrous 0-6 start to the season.

Jeff Garlett and Christian Salem are both out with hamstring injuries for the Demons, who have ridden a four-game winning streak to fifth spot.

Jack Watts (hamstring) and Jesse Hogan (testicular cancer) weren't able to prove they're ready to resume.

Mitch White and Josh Wagner are the inclusions for Simon Goodwin's side.

In other round 15 selection news, injury-hit Geelong made four changes for their much-anticipated clash with Greater Western Sydney but have named Joel Selwood.

The Cats skipper is no certainty to face the Giants on Saturday as he continues to recover from a concussion.

Scott Selwood (hamstring), George Horlin-Smith (ankle), Tom Stewart (facial fracture) and Darcy Lang (leg) are out for the Cats, while the Giants regained Josh Kelly, Rory Lobb and Devon Smith for the Spotless Stadium encounter.

Geelong brought in Lachie Henderson, Zac Smith and Aaron Black and also handed Zach Guthrie, brother of Cam, his AFL debut.

In other notable AFL selection moves ahead of round 15, Gold Coast's Gary Ablett, the Western Bulldogs' Bob Murphy, Sydney's Jarrad McVeigh, Collingwood's Jamie Elliott and Fremantle pair Nat Fyfe and Aaron Sandilands are all back from injury.
