Swans upbeat Kennedy will face Hawthorn

Jarrad McVeigh and Dan Hannebery are upbeat Sydney teammate Josh Kennedy will return from a hamstring injury against Hawthorn in AFL round nine.

Sydney's Josh Kennedy will be racing the clock as he seeks to return from a minor hamstring injury against reigning AFL premiers Hawthorn on Friday night.

Kennedy was sorely missed in the Swans' one-point loss to Richmond at the MCG, where Sam Lloyd kicked a goal after the siren to put the hosts ahead.

"Being a short week, I'm sure it will be touch and go," Swans co-captain Jarrad McVeigh told reporters on Sunday.

"Obviously you miss him .. you miss your best players.

"You can't replicate what he does in a game so it'll be good to have him back.

"He's one of the best contested-ball, stoppage players in the competition."

Swans midfielder Dan Hannebery was upbeat but unsure about Kennedy's chances of facing his former side.

"It was nothing major. I'm pretty sure with a bit of rehab this week he should be ok for the game. We're hoping," Hannebery told the Seven Network.

"It was probably an area we were down a little bit last night, clearances.

"We hope he'll recover this week and be right to play the Hawks."

Much of the Swans' review will focus on the frantic finish to their thrilling clash with Richmond and whether the visitors could have done more to maintain possession.

Hannebery agreed it was an issue but felt there were plenty of other issues his side could improve on.

"I didn't think we deserved to win, even though we probably should have iced the game," he said.

"Their midfield was better, they had too many shots on goal."
