Swepson, Burns lead Qld to one-day win

Former Test opener Joe Burns and spinner Mitchell Swepson have played leading hands in Queensland's one-day win over Tasmania.

Young leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson claimed career-best one-day figures to help Queensland to an 83-run win over Tasmania in Hobart, ending the home side's unlikely quest for a finals spot.

Defending 8-339, Swepson picked up the big scalps of opposition skipper George Bailey and Matthew Wade to finish with 3-52 at Bellerive Oval on Tuesday.

Tasmania needed an unlikely double bonus point win to qualify for Thursday's elimination final at the same ground, meaning they had to chase the hefty target within 24.5 overs.

But they were never in the hunt, dismissed for 256 in the penultimate over on Tuesday.

The result means Victoria play South Australia for a spot in this weekend's final against Western Australia, who progressed directly after finishing top of the table.

"Realistically it was going to be hard to chase in 50 overs," Bailey said.

"We just spoke about putting the 25 overs aside. (It was) a good opportunity to try and set a game up and push to try and win it normally.

"We were outplayed in all three facets."

Tasmania lost three early wickets, with Bulls opening bowler Michael Neser finishing with a miserly 2-27.

Former Test opener Joe Burns top-scored for Queensland with 79 off 62 balls after they won the toss and chose to bat.

Youngsters Marnus Labuschagne and Sam Heazlett also hit half centuries.

Seamer Simon Milenko picked up four wickets but conceded 80 runs off ten overs.
