Tasmanian Bernard Sulzberger has a suspected broken collarbone and British sprint ace Mark Cavendish was among the riders suffering from cuts and abrasions.
The last crash happened as the field came in to the last corner for a high speed sprint finish.

British rider Ben Swift won the 146km stage from Tailem Bend to Mannum on the Murray River.
Australian star Robbie McEwen managed to stay out of trouble to finish among the leaders.
McEwen took the race lead from Tasmanian Matt Goss, who went down in a crash a few kilometres from the finish.
Goss suffered scrapes and cuts, but apparently did not lose any time.
More than a dozen riders came across the line after the main field, looking much the worse for wear and clearly suffering the effects of their crashes.
