A man has drowned in Tasmania after he got caught in a rip at Roaring Beach.

A man has drowned after he became caught in a rip at a beach in Tasmania's southeast.

The man, in his 50s, was swimming with his family at Roaring Beach in Nubeena when he experienced trouble on Sunday afternoon.

Tasmania Police Sergeant Adam Baker said the incident was a reminder for swimmers to take care in the water.

"It would appear that he has been caught in a rip and has succumbed to the conditions," Sgt Baker said.

A helicopter with a paramedic aboard was sent to the scene along with ambulance and police.
