Up to 40 people presented themselves to St George and Sutherland hospitals with gastroenteritis symptoms including vomiting, fever and cramps, a NSW Health spokeswoman says.

Director of Public Health in the south-east of Sydney, Professor Mark Ferson, confirmed that a number of the hospitalised patients have tested positive for salmonella poisoning.

"We have a small number of positive results for salmonella so far. More results will come through in the next few days."
